While no video game is without it's flaws, long tome video game heroine Lara Croft's recent ventures, Legend, Anniversary and Underworld have been met with less than stellar reception from the Tomb Raider Fandom. Maybe it's age, maybe she has become a relic like the very thing she herself scavenges ancient tombs for, but there were some folk who enjoyed her recent outings. Unfortunately, however, all the well known Tomb Raider web sites and forums have dedicated their energy to complaining about the newer games and there is rarely a place on any of these sites for fans of Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld to commune together before said place gets corrupted by the age old complaints that have been going on for two plus years now. With that said, welcome to new_raider_fans; The Tomb Raider community dedicated to the general discussion and appreciation of Crystal Dynamic's Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld (plus their upcoming title Tomb Raider 9 with their new publisher Square Enix Europe). Other subjects like the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Comic Books published by TopCow, are greatly welcome as well.
About Members Only Position:
For the time being this community is MEMBERS ONLY. Why, you ask? The answer is an obvious one: Because naturally this is a community for fans of the recent Raider games, not those who didn't like them. No this isn't some ploy to get more members; I maintain several other communities with a healthy or average community member count, so I'm quite aware that you'll ether join / watch if your interested or not join at all and find someplace else. Its Members Only as way to make sure those who really enjoyed these recent games aren't bombarded with anonymous repliers or livejournal users who just joined to leave negative or hateful comments. I know it won't stop people from doing this type of thing, but if it complicates a flame's day even more, then why not? Please be aware that this is NOT a community where you can bash the earlier games in the Tomb Raider series, so please don't start anything in that fashion, alright?
Lara Croft's mother Amelia went missing in the aftermath of a plane crash, leaving 9 year old Lara as the only survivor (as seen in Legend). Lara's father Richard, a renowned archaeologist, was convinced that Amelia was still alive and he became obsessed with finding out what happened to her. He took Lara with him on expeditions searching for the Scion, an artifact that he believed contained a vast library of information from Atlantis which might somehow explain how Amelia disappeared. He was widely ridiculed for believing that Atlantis was the foundation of all ancient civilizations, and he disappeared himself before he could find the Scion to support his theories. Now, in Lara's "present day" (set in 1996 which is the year the original Tomb Raider came out), Lara is contacted by a business woman named Natla who hires Lara to find the Scion. She provides Lara with the location of the first part of the Scion and so Lara sets out to find the artifact and attempt to discover the truth for herself. Her search will take her through Peru, Greece, Egypt, and even a remnant of the Lost Island of Atlantis.
When Lara was nine years old, she and her mother Amelia were involved in a plane crash in Nepal. While looking for firewood, young Lara discovered an ancient dais with a sword sticking out of a stone. When she accidentally activated the device, her mother disappeared in a flash of light. Later on, during one of Lara's university trips to an archaeological dig in Peru, disaster struck and Lara watched as her close friend Amanda got buried under a ton of collapsing rubble. Now, in present day, Lara has discovered clues concerning the sword and dais which caused her mother to disappear. While investigating this, she also becomes aware that Amanda may not have died. Determined to find the answers to both mysteries, Lara sets out across Bolivia, Peru, Japan, Ghana, Kazakhstan, England, and Nepal while searching for fragments of an ancient sword.
Tomb Raider: Underworld marks the first game in this flagship series that is designed specifically for next generation consoles (although also being released on Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS). Lara Croft uncovers proof of the existence of the mythical hammer of the Norse god Thor, a weapon rumoured to have the power to smash mountains into valleys and destroy the gods themselves. Setting an epic journey around the globe in motion, Lara visits the ruins of ancient civilizations, collecting clues that lead her to a forgotten power that could lay waste to all civilization. Exploiting the power and capabilities of next generation consoles, Lara must hunt for clues across larger than life environments, seen with exquisite, detailed clarity. Solving multifaceted puzzles, facing foes both animal and supernatural, players have the aid of enhanced weapons and abilities, as they explore the secrets of the past. Also coming to the Wii and Nintendo DS consoles, Tomb Raider: Underworld for these systems features exclusive additions not included on other platforms. The Wii version includes an archaeological toolkit exclusive to this console that allows players to excavate hidden areas and secrets with the aid of a compressed air gun, acetylene torch, chisel and pliers. Through out the game Lara Croft realises that taking these artifacts may be the prime cause of destroying the human civilisation in the future.
